The Schindler House on Kings Road in West Hollywood, California is considered among the world's first modern houses. It was designed and built by Viennese émigré architect Rudolf Michael Schindler in 1921-22, and redefined notions of public and private, and indoor and outdoor, while breaking new ground in the design and construction of the modern dwelling. Schindler and his wife Pauline regularly played host to artists, musicians, poets, writers, and actors, and their home became a center for avant-garde art and inquiry. The house has influenced and inspired generations of architects worldwide. Today, it is one of Los Angeles's most beloved architectural and cultural landmarks.
