Bozemans entire method also needs but very little assistanceduring the operation. This desire induced several surgeons todevise certain contrivances whereby the speculum could bekept securely in its proper position without requiring the aidof an assistant. Thus Spencer Wells is reported to have per-formed several operations without any assistance whatsoever byemploying Sims speculum, * modified by Foveant in such a man-ner as to connect it with a plate attached to the sacral region. Ihave myself assisted in several operations where this modifiedspeculum was used, but I was obliged to pay so much attentionto the sacral plate that I should have almost preferred Simsbeak with Simons handle.
