The Plague Doctor! During the plague epidemic in Venice in the 15th century, some doctors treating plague patients wore a beak-like mask which was filled with aromatic items and designed to protect them from the putrid air, which (according to the miasmatic theory of disease) was seen as the cause of infection. (see plague doctor on Wikipedia). A modern interpretation of this mask shot in St Mark's square at the first crack of daylight during the Venice Carnical.
