The overgrown stadium of the ancient Roman city of Nicopolis, before excavation. Nicopolis was built by Augustus Caesar (formerly Octavian) to commemorate his victory over the fleets of Mark Antony and Cleopatra in the naval battle of Actium, which took place nearby. Near Preveza, Epirus, Greece. Nicopolis has tentative status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
