The local group Extinction Rebellion Strasbourg denounces the inconsistency of the State concerning the management of waste on the Stocamine site. The activists have poured fluorescein into several fountains in the city. The state has decided to bury 42, 000 tons of waste classified as 0 and 1 in the former potash mines in Wittelsheim. This waste has been stored under the largest water table in Europe since 1999, risking affecting more than 7 million people, and impacting the local fauna and flora in Alsace, Germany and Switzerland. Moreover, there would be a seismic risk. The mine is weakened, cracked and collapsing on itself. Numerous studies have shown that the destocking was still possible and a good number of associations, communities and elected officials have been asking for the destocking of the site for about twenty years. Extinction Rebellion Strasbourg, through this action today, joins these requests and demands that the State take its responsibilities and destock this waste, the burial works being supposed to start mid-October 2021.
