More information:

At the beginning of the First World War, the shipyards at Hartlepool in north eastern England became a target for the German Navy, and one of the first German offensives against Britain was the raid on Scarborough, Hartlepool and Whitby on the morning of 16 December 1914, when units of the Imperial German Navy bombarded Hartlepool, West Hartlepool, Whitby and Scarborough. Hartlepool was hit with a total of 1150 shells, killing 117 people. The first shells fell near the Headland lighthouse, and a plaque in the nearby Redheugh Gardens War Memorial commemorates the events of that day. Guns at the Heugh and Lighthouse batteries returned fire, thus becoming the only British gun battery to have fired its guns in anger during the First World War.
