RM2CERCTN–An old engraving of Exeter Hall, the Strand, London, England, UK c. 1840. It was erected between 1829 and 1831 on the site of Exeter Exchange. The main hall's auditorium could hold more than 4,000 people. Exeter Hall hosted religious and philanthropic meetings. The meetings of the Anti-Slavery Society took place here, and the words ‘Exeter Hall’ became synonymous with the anti-slavery lobby. It became the headquarters of YMCA (founded in 1844). Exeter Hall was sold by YMCA to the J. Lyons & Co in 1907. The building was demolished and the Strand Palace Hotel built in its place, opening in 1909.
