From these records it appears that the grant to theFugger firm embraced the whole lower end of thesouthern hemisphere, between the straits of Magellanand the southern boundary of Peru ; in fact, thatChili, the most progressive of the modern republicsof South America, was originally a German colony.From these documents aspublished it appears thatthe original grant wasmade on July 25, 1529, toone Simon de Aleazaba.It was not long, however, before we find the conces-sion transferred to theGermans; Veit Horl, ^^the resident factor of theFuggers at Seville, havingnegotiated the transfer.^^^ There appears to havebeen considerable negotia-tion between the SpanishIndian office and the Ger-man merchants in refer-ence to the particulars and emoluments. A personal
