Cadmium is a silvery metal with a bluish tinge to its surface. The name is derived from the Latin 'cadmia', the name for the mineral calmine. Image shows a detail of an old style mainly black and white periodic table used in a UK school (more modern tables are in multiple colours and/or have images and other element details. This is a real, school-used periodic table hence the folds and creases visible in the image. Each element is in a black box showing the chemical symbol (centre letter(s)), the atomic number above the letters in red and the atomic mass (normal in whole numbers) below the letters in black.
