This memorial to the Canadian soldiers in the First World War (also called the Great War) is located near the City of Arras in Northern France. The strategic ridge had been captured by German forces early in the war, but two separate Allied armies had failed to dislodge them. Finally, in 1917 the Canadian Army succeeded in doing so. This courageous victory is said by many to mark the maturing of Canada as a nation.
