Fought between August 1942 and February 1943, the Battle of Stalingrad was one of the bloodiest in history, 750,000 Russian soldiers were killed, wounded or captured and more than 40,000 civilians died. On the Axis side, 740,000 were killed or wounded and 110,000 taken prisoner. The defeat at Stalingrad was a reverse from which Nazi Germany was ultimately unable to recover. It was one of the first and the largest of the concentration camps within Germany's 1937 borders. The camp gained notoriety when it was liberated by the United States Army in April 1945.

RMD98B0W–Fernando Francesco d'Ávalos, Marquess of Pescara, (1489 – December 1525) was an Italian condottiero. General of the Spanish army, in the Italian Wars. At the Battle of Ravenna in 1512 he was taken prisoner by the French, but was released at the conclusion of the War of the League of Cambrai. He was the chief commander of the Habsburg armies in Italy during the Habsburg-Valois Wars.
