RM2B6D4HX–The Bloody Tower (with Portcullis down), Tower of London, London, c1926. By Donald Maxwell (1877-1936). The Tower of London, officially Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress of the Tower of London, was founded towards the end of 1066 as part of the Norman Conquest of England. Immediately to the west of Wakefield Tower, the Bloody Tower was built as a water-gate to provide access to the castle from the River Thames. A simple structure it is protected by a portcullis and gate. The Bloody Tower acquired its name as it was believed to be the site of the murder of the Princes in the Tower.
