RM2G71GRM–An old engraving of showing a cross-section of the ‘tube’ of the Britannia Railway Bridge c.1850. It is from a Victorian book of the 1890s on discoveries and inventions during the 1800s. The Britannia Bridge (Pont Britannia) is a bridge across the Menai Strait between the island of Anglesey and the mainland of Wales. It was designed and built by the railway engineer Robert Stephenson as a tubular bridge of riveted wrought iron rectangular box-section spans. The tubes were manoeuvred into place between June 1849 and February 1850. The bridge opened to rail traffic in March 1850.

It is 820 metres (900 yd) long and carries the Cambrian Line. It is the longest timber viaduct in Wales and opened in 1867, one of the oldest in regular use in Britain.
