RM2DANT29–An old engraving of a patient having his larynx examined by a doctor using a laryngoscope. It is from a Victorian mechanical book of the 1880s. Laryngoscopy is endoscopy of the larynx, part of the throat in order to view the vocal folds and the glottis. Many versions of the apparatus were invented in the 1800s. The one illustrated is a Tieman laryngoscope. An artificial light source (left) shines onto the concave mirror the doctor holds and is reflected down the patient’s mouth onto a smaller mirror on the end of the instrument inserted into the mouth, illuminating the area for inspection.

RM2RB44WH–An old engraving from the 1800s of a horse sling. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. A horse sling is a harness device designed to lift and suspend a horse from the ground. Here the horse is being winched up from below and a sling was used in mines for this purpose. Horse slings could be used within ships when transporting the animals. Horse slings are often used for medical purposes to aid horses with leg injuries.

Illustrations show the differently designed prosthetics used to aid clasping, flexing and holding. Some of these were operated by other parts of the body – C shows two views of a ‘Selpho’ arm – a spring controlled by the opposite shoulder enables hand movements.

Londoner James Potts invented an above-knee prosthetic in 1800 with a calf and thigh socket made of wood, and a flexible foot. Illustrations show the differently designed prosthetics used to aid walking. D and E illustrate prosthetics with a ball socket at the ankle joint allowing for added mobility.

RM2DD3BK0–An old engraving of an ophthalmoscope. It is from a Victorian book of the 1880s. Ophthalmoscopy (or funduscopy) allows a doctor to see inside the eye using this device. This version is Knapp’s auto-ophthalmoscope, set up in front of a patient. A light source (a) supplies light to an inclined reflector (b) which bounces the light towards the patient’s pupil (c in the top diagram). A hole in the plate at the rear of the instrument allows the doctor to view (d). The ophthalmoscope was invented by Hermann von Helmholtz in 1851. Hermann Knapp of New York was an expert instrument and lens maker.

RM2G7CE93–An old engraving showing Clarke’s magneto-electric machine. It is from a book of the 1890s on Victorian discoveries and inventions during the 1800s. A magneto is an electrical generator that uses magnets to produce alternating current. Here a powerful steel magnet is placed upright. When the rotating wheel (rear) is turned, two (induced) coils (centre) are rotated. The voltages induced in the coils generate currents. This small electric shock can be felt by someone picking up the two brass handles (foreground) – an early form of electrotherapy. It was invented by Edward Clarke in the 1830s.
