Mr. R. H. Dana, 1876. 'The Senate of the United States has rejected, for party or personal reasons, President Grant's appointment of this gentleman...as American Minister in London...At the age of nineteen, Mr. R. H. Dana, being compelled to relinquish his studies at Harvard in consequence of the failure of his eyesight, went to sea in a merchant-vessel as a common sailor. Upon his return he wrote and published a very graphic description of his voyages in the well-known book entitled "Two Years Before the Mast."
