Roughly 25,000 Union soldiers died in Confederate prisons and some 31,000 Confederate soldiers died as Union POW’s. After an illustration by an unknown artist which appeared in the June 18, 1864 edition of Frank Leslie's illustrated newspaper. The illustration was compiled from official photographs.

RM2B00W53–China: The former prisoners of Stanley Camp salute the Union Jack in August, 1945, after 42 months in Japanese captivity. Stanley Internment Camp was a civilian internment camp in Hong Kong during World War II. Located in Stanley, on the southern end of Hong Kong Island, it was used by the Japanese imperial forces to hold non-Chinese enemy nationals after their victory in the Battle of Hong Kong, a battle in the Pacific campaign of World War II. About 2,800 men, women, and children were held at the camp for 44 months from January 1942 to August 1945 when Japanese forces surrendered.

The important Battle of Dien Bien Phu was fought between the Việt Minh (led by General Vo Nguyen Giap), and the French Union (led by General Henri Navarre, successor to General Raoul Salan). The siege of the French garrison lasted fifty-seven days, from 5:30 PM on March 13 to 5:30 PM on May 7, 1954. The southern outpost or fire base of the camp, Isabelle, did not follow the cease-fire order and fought until the next day at 01:00 AM.
