Rerik, Germany. 31st May, 2023. Fisherman Maik Never empties the trap nets with the freshly caught Baltic Sea crabs at sunrise on the Salzhaff. Since time immemorial, female crabs have been migrating towards the open Baltic Sea to spawn in the Salzhaff between Wismar and Rerik at the beginning of June. It is the only place on the Baltic coast where the crustaceans are still caught today. Especially local gourmets appreciate the fresh Baltic Sea crabs, but their catches are minimal compared to the North Sea.
