Inside the building is a narrow courtyard (13 yd × 4 yd considered by historians and writers to be a particularly fine example of English domestic architecture of the period. During the Coventry Blitz, the building was hit by German bombing,but was restored with the original timbers between 1951 and 1953.

In 1216, a group of rebel barons, dissatisfied with King John invited the future Louis VIII of France to come and take the English crown. Louis needed to sieze the castle and the first siege began on 19 July. Louis took the high ground to the north Hubert de Burgh's garrison of men repelled the invaders, blocking the breach in the walls with giant timbers. After three months Louis called a truce on 14 October.

She stoped to talk to Mr and Mrs Oldfield, who lost seven relatives when a bomb hit their house, killing 12 people in all. Mr Oldfield told the Duchess how he had been trapped by by heavy timbers for an hour and a half in the demolished house before being extracated by the rescue squad.
