Billeted in Bedford, the Student Soldiers of U Company, underwent training for war and adapted to the stricter discipline of a fighting battalion. RM2M3P8XP–Sir Ernest Beachcroft Beckwith Towse VC (23 April 1864 21 June 1948) of the Gordon Highlanders, who had gone to the front to work as a staff officer despite being totally blind, the result of this VC action during the Boer War. Captain Towse was a remarkable man. After losing his sight, he worked with wounded soldiers at the front, typing letters among other things. He was chairman of the British and Foreign Blind Association and in 1940, donated his house to the cause to be used as a rehabilitation centre.
