RM2G7G88M–A late 19th century view of the Twa Bridges of Ayr, Scotland. The 'Auld Brig' served as the sole river crossing in Ayr for over three centuries and construction of the New Bridge commenced in the autumn of 1786. It was while the new bridge was under construction that Robert Burns' famous poem, 'The Brigs of Ayr' was written in 1787 that truly immortalized the 'Auld Brig'. The new bridge was opened the following year.

Robert Burns, wrote it would still be standing when the New Brig (built in his lifetime) was reduced to a 'shapeless cairn (stone heap)'. The so-called New Brig came down and was replaced in the 19th century, whilst the Auld Brig remains and is one of the oldest stone bridges in Scotland.
