Part of the Mahdist War (1881-1899), the Battle of Tamai/Tamanieh occurred on the 13th of March, 1884, between a British force under Lieutenant General Sir Gerald Graham and a Mahdist army commanded by Osman Digna, the Mahdi's best known commander. Despite winning the battle, the British suffered more losses here than in any previous battle, with around 214 soldiers wounded or killed, though the they inflicted casualties of over 4,000 men on the Mahdists.

Major-General Charles George Gordon, also known as Chinese Gordon and Gordon Pasha, was a British Army officer and administrator who saw action in the Crimean War and in China. He served the Khedive of Egypt in 1873, becoming the Governor-General of the Sudan. General Gordon was killed by Mahdist forces during the Mahdist War on January 26, 1885. The manner of his death is uncertain but it was romanticised in in the British media.

The first archeological record of what could be a prehistoric battle is at a Mesolithic site known as Cemetery 117. It was determined to be about 14,340 to 13,140 years old and located on the Nile near the Egypt-Sudan border. It contains a large number of bodies, many with arrowheads embedded in their skeletons, which indicates that they may have been the casualties of a battle. RM2J2D7FR–Terry Hall and The Colourfield performed on stage at Coventry Lanchester Polytechnic in the 'Cov Aid' event to help feed starving children in Africa. It was the hometown debut for the Colourfield. 15 bands from the Coventry area each performed a 20-minute set in the six-and-a-half-hour celebration. They alternated between two halls, playing to more thatn 800 enthusiastic pop fans. The event raised more than 3,200 for the war against hunger in Ethiopia and Sudan.21st October 1985
