RM2D6KJ92–An old engraving showing excavations, coffer dam/cassion and tunnels under East River, New York City, USA c.1875. It is from a Victorian book of the 1880s. In 1851, to aid navigation, obstacles from Hell Gate, a strait in the river, were removed with explosives. The largest obstruction was Hallett's Point. Removing this reef began in 1869. A timber coffer-dam was built. It was pumped out and at the base tunnels dug. Explosives were packed into drill holes within the tunnels. The explosions demolished the obstruction. Debris was removed by box-carts and the carts lifted out by a derrick.

The $592 million Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) Southeast dry dock recapitalization project began in the summer of 2020, and is slated to be completed in April 2023.
