RM2H0XYAK–Cuirassier's Armor: Helmet, c. 1600–20. Austria, Graz(?), early 17th century. Steel (originally blued, now black); leather straps; overall: 171.4 cm (67 1/2 in.). The cuirassier was the heavy cavalryman of the late 1500s and early 1600s. Carrying pistols and a sword, he was clad in full armor, with the exception of his lower legs, which were protected by heavy riding boots. Shortly after 1650, such heavy cavalry armor disappeared from use. By then, European cavalries had abandoned full armor as impractical against the increased sophistication of firearms.
RM2A50C2D–Breastplate from Hussar's Cuirass, c. 1580. This style of breastplate, with its numerous articulating lames, was probably used by a Hungarian hussar, a type of light cavalryman. The steel plates were originally blued-now turned russet-and etched and gilded with strapwork bands. The rows of vertical holes once provided gilt-brass settings for stones or glasspaste jewels. The effect would have suggested the semi-oriental costume and armor of the Near East favored by Polish and Hungarian armies of the late Renaissance.

The back of the blade etched with crescent moons on gilt ground. Probably an originally unassociated brass hilt and steel scabbard, presumably added in the later period of use. Length 95 cm. Probably a captured Russian blade. E, Additional-Rights-Clearance-Info-Not-Available

RM2HH5ADE–Armor of the Dukes of Alba ca. 1575–85 Lucio Piccinino Italian This is one of the few armors attributable to Lucio Piccinino, the last of the great Italian armor embossers. Distinctive of Piccinino's style is the covering of the armor surface with a dense network of embossed ornament with vertical bands connected laterally by swags of acanthus and fruit. Originally, the steel ground was blued and highlighted with gold and silver damascening. Although damaged by fire in the nineteenth century, this armor amply demonstrates Piccinino's skill in designing a complex program of Classically inspired

This element for the shoulder once belonged to a suit decorated by the bluing technique, a process of superheating armor plates to achieve a deep blue color. Bluing required heating to at least 590 degrees Fahrenheit, the temperature at which oxidation occurs. Although the original color is now darkened it would have originally been a deep shade of blue. It was further enhanced with gilding to create additional contrast for a refined appearance.
