RMJR31F5–Rear view of cowboy wearing chaps and spurs. The historic American cowboy of the late 19th century arose from the vaquero traditions of northern Mexico and became a figure of special significance and legend. By the late 1860s, following the American Civil War and the expansion of the cattle industry, former soldiers from both the Union and Confederacy came west, seeking work, as did large numbers of restless white men in general. RMPB4CBD–The Battle of the Spurs, or Battle of Guinegate, took place on 16 August 1513. Henry VIII had joined in the Holy League in 1511 with Venice and Spain to defend the Papacy from its enemies and France with military force. As part of the Holy League, during the ongoing Italian Wars, English and Imperial troops under Henry VIII and Maximilian I surprised and routed a body of French cavalry under Jacques de La Palice. In the 15th century, rowel spurs with very long necks were of common use in western Europe. At this period, the elevated war saddles and the very specific riding style, with long stirrup leathers and legs extended forward, had the consequence of taking away the rider's feet from the horse's flank. Thus, these long necks gave them easier access without having to disturb the rider's position. Museum: Metropolitan Museum
