RM2BFKRH2–Cover of the Monster Book for Boys c. 1950 published by Dean and Son Ltd, London, England, UK. Anthology books and annuals such as this were often the staple Christmas present of a British post-war childhood. The Monster Book series were a collection of stories and this title featured an illustration of motorcycle speedway racers on the cover. Speedway (track racing or dirt track racing in North America) is a popular sport (especially in Northern Europe) and racing consists of laps of a soft surface cinder, shale or dirt oval circuit.

The venue has been the home track of the ‘All American Soap Box Derby’ since it was built as a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project in the 1930s. The band members are from the Gordon Pipers from the Indianapolis 500 Speedway. Traditions abound with famous previous winners of races shown on banners, including Fred Derks (1949) and Harold ‘Butch’ Williamson (1950). This image is from an old American amateur Kodak colour transparency – a vintage 1960s photograph.
