RM2WJD3ED–HMS Brunswick and the Venguer, published 1904. HMS Brunswick was a 74-gun third rate ship-of-the-line of the Royal Navy, launched on 30 April 1790 at Deptford. She was first commissioned in the following month under Sir Hyde Parker for the Spanish Armament but was not called into action. When the Russian Armament was resolved without conflict in August 1791, Brunswick took up service as a guardship in Portsmouth Harbour. She joined Richard Howe's Channel Fleet at the outbreak of the French Revolutionary War and was present at the battle on Glorious First of June where she fought a hard action

This was increased to 140 guns around 1802, thus creating what was in effect a continuous fourth gundeck although the extra guns added were actually relatively small. She was the heaviest-armed ship in the world when rebuilt, and bore the most guns of any ship of the line outfitted in the Age of Sail. she took part in the Battle of Trafalgar on October 21, 1805, as part of the combined Franco-Spanish fleet.

The Spanish fleets under French Admiral Villeneuve encountered the British fleet recently assembled to meet this threat, in the Atlantic Ocean along the southwest coast of Spain, off Cape Trafalgar. Admiral Villeneuve was uncertain about engaging the British, and the Franco-Spanish fleet failed to organise fully. In contrast, Nelson was decisive, directing the British fleet into two columns decimating the enemy.

During the War of Spanish Succession, four warships of a Royal Navy fleet were lost off the Isles of Scilly in severe weather on 22 October 1707. 1550 sailors aboard the wrecked vessels lost their lives, including Commander-in-Chief of the British Fleets, Sir Cloudesley Shovell, who body was stripped by wreckers.

RMHH70KJ–In retaliation for the execution of Mary, King Philip III vowed to invade England to place a Catholic monarch on its throne. He assembled a fleet of about 130 ship and the Armada set sail for on 28 May 1588. However, the English navy inflicted a defeat on the Armada in the Battle of Gravelines near Calais before this could be accomplished, and forced the Armada to sail northward. It sailed around Scotland, where it suffered severe damage and loss of life from stormy weather.
