RM2C7HT58–An old illustration of an ancient battering ram used in warfare for demolition of walls, destruction of castle doors etc, especially during sieges. This one (known as a capped ram, using a metal re-enforced tip) was manually operated, though some were encased in an arrow-proof, fire-resistant canopy inside which the log could be swung from suspended chains or ropes. One train of thought is that the famous children's rhyme, Humpty Dumpty, is about a type of large battering ram used in sieges in the English Civil War. Capped rams were also once used in mining operations.
