Roundels with hunters, 800s. These textiles are woven with floral roundels that enclose horsemen hunting lions. The theme of horsemen hunting with lances, the floral frames of the roundels, and the costumes of the hunters were all inspired by silks from the Byzantine world. The stiff, abstracted style, however, is characteristic of Sogdian silks. Silks woven in Sogdiana were often traded to distant markets. These fragments were preserved in an Egyptian grave where they were found sewn as ornaments onto a tunic. Samite roundels with hunters, 800s. Canopy with Dragon Among Flowers, late 1100s. This rare silk tapestry in the center, from the Southern Song imperial workshop in Hangzhou, incorporates Central Asian and Chinese influence. The golden dragon on a ground of flowers is Central Asian, as are the dragon’s upturned snout, flaming mane, and antlers. The serpent-like treatment of the dragon’s body, however, is Chinese in style. The fineness of the silk threads, weaving, and flat gold thread gilded on both sides indicates imperial production. Blackpool, UK. 10th July, 2016. Knitters from around the UK were welcomed to Blackpool sea front to spin their own yarn in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for simultaneous knitting. The hardy wool warriors were faced with a blustery cool breeze but were able to knit themselves warm. The current world record stands at 3089 people & with the assistance of the Town Crier 'Barry McQueen', new recruits were summoned from pavements & were more than happy to join in the fun.
