He is primarily known today for his maps and charts collected in his Kitab-i Bahriye (Book of Navigation), a book which contains detailed information on navigation, as well as very accurate charts (for its time) describing the important ports and cities of the Mediterranean Sea.

The Resolution was responsible for some remarkable feats and was to prove one of the significant historical ships. She was the first ship to cross the Antarctic Circle (17 January 1773) and crossed twice more on the voyage. Vice Admiral Sir Francis Drake (1540-1596) was an English sea captain, privateer, circumnavigator, slaver, a renowned pirate, and a politician of the Elizabethan era. Elizabeth I of England awarded Drake a knighthood in 1581. He was second-in-command of the English fleet against the Spanish Armada in 1588, subordinate only to Charles Howard and the Queen herself. He died of dysentery in January 1596 after unsuccessfully attacking San Juan, Puerto Rico.
