RM2E1RX1D–An old engraving of a machine for making wooden matches. It is from a Victorian book of the 1880s. Timber is fed into the machine (centre rear). Cutters reduce this wood to individual matches (centre) ready to be tipped with phosphorus. Early matches used white phosphorus, but being easy to ignite, they caused accidental fires and white phosphorus was highly toxic. Using nontoxic red phosphorus, Swede J E Lundstrom introduced safety matches in 1855. Early match making was done manually. Mechanisation slowly took over in the 1800s – the first automatic match machine was patented in 1888.
