RMR6RMBB–The Raid on the Medway, during the Second Anglo-Dutch War in June 1667, was a successful attack conducted by the Dutch navy on English battleships when most were virtually unmanned and unarmed, laid up in the fleet anchorages off Chatham Dockyard and Gillingham in the county of Kent. The Dutch captured the town of Sheerness, then sailed into the River Medway to Chatham and Gillingham, where they engaged fortifications with cannon fire, burned or captured three capital ships and ten more ships of the line, and captured and towed away the flagship of the English fleet, HMS Royal Charles.

RMRFT828–Sheerness Dockyard also known as the Sheerness Station was a Royal Navy Dockyard located on the Sheerness peninsula, at the mouth of the River Medway in Kent opened in the 1660s. It initially functioned as an extension to Chatham and was conceived primarily for the repair and maintenance of naval ships and no shipbuilding took place until 1691. The first dry-dock was completed in 1708; a second was added in 1720 with access through a tidal basin, known as the Mud Dock. The dockyard began to expand and by 1800 had Dockyard filled all available space.

The town founded in 1790 by Sir William Hamilton, who designed a grid pattern is situated on the north side of the Milford Haven Waterway, an estuary forming a natural harbour and has been used as a port since the Middle Ages. It was originally intended to be a whaling centre, though by 1800 it was developing as a Royal Navy dockyard which it remained until the dockyard was transferred to Pembroke in 1814.

The Dutch, under nominal command of Lieutenant-Admiral Michiel de Ruyter, bombarded and then captured the town of Sheerness, sailed up the River Thames to Gravesend, then up the River Medway to Chatham.
