Situated next to West Gate on the High Street, Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester acquired the buildings in 1571, to be used as a hospital for aged or injured soliders under a royal charter from Queen Elizabeth 1. In that era, a hospital did not mean a medical facility, but more of a care or rest home. In the street, we can see a man on a bicycle, with a small child sitting on the back.
