RMD36CC1–(dpa files) - The German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger controls the edge of a sabre of Andreas Stadler, a chief of the Bavarian rifleman in Munich, 28 February 1982. On 25 November 1981, Pope John Paul II summoned Cardinal Ratzinger to the Vatican where he announced that he would become the new Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Cardinal Ratzinger resigned his position as Archbishop on February 15, 1982 and returned permanently to theVatican where he took up residence and set about supervising this most important curial office.
