The advert appeared in a magazine published in the UK in June that year – the issue was a special edition, published to mark the coronation of Queen Elizabeth. The illustration shows a working horse and it concentrates on saving these animals from being butchered for meat at the end of their working lives. The organisation was founded in 1897 in London as Our Dumb Friends League, to care for working horses. It opened its first animal hospital in London’s Victoria in 1906 – vintage 1950s graphics for editorial use.
