The 'Vecta', the new Voith Schneider propelled vessel built by John I Thornycroft and Co Ltd, for the Southampton, Isle of Wight and South of England Royal Mail Steam Packet Co Ltd, was launched at Southampton by the Hon Mrs E Pleydell Bouverie. The new vessel is equipped with two Voith Schneider propellers and dispenses with a rudder. The Voith Schneider propeller consists of six vertical blades.
