The Prince had just left the luncheon tent when - to quote the 'Sydney Mail' - 'a treacherous assailant stole up behind him, pulled out a revolver, took deliberate aim, and fired.' He was the second son (fourth child) of Britain's Queen Victoria and was named Duke of Edinburgh during the Queen's Birthday Honours on 24 May 1866. Pictured (l to r) are Miss Isabel Harker (never married), Gertie Pennock (later Mrs Edwin Todd) & Amy Smith (later Mrs G Heselton). The relevance of the costumes is unknown.
