RMM7280G–Two commercial vehicles and their drivers, West Yorkshire, England, UK c. 1917. They each have a massive bag containing coal gas on the roof. This gas was used to power the trucks. During World War I in the UK and Europe petrol (gasoline) supplies were almost non-existent in many areas. All available fuel was diverted to power military vehicles, boats and aircraft during the war efforts - so gas became an alternative fuel.

A humorous comment on the use of coal gas powered vehicles during the First World War, introduced as petrol became increasingly scarce. The 'gas bag' cars carried their fuel in an enormous rubber bag on the roof and were the subject of many jokes and cartoons such as this one by Alfred Leete, an artist best known for his famous Kitchener 'Your King and Country Needs You' cover for London Opinion magazine. RM2H7PT62–1935, historical, a young man cycling past a colliery in the valley at Ebbw Vale, Wales, UK. From the1800s, Ebbw Vale had developed into a major centre for the production of iron and steel, powered by the coal from tthe numerous mines in the area. In the picture we can see the mine stack or chimney which was attached to the engine house and which interestingly is a square construction as opposed to the normal round.

RMJR3199–The Watts steam engine was the first type of steam engine to make use of steam at a pressure just above atmospheric to drive the piston helped by a partial vacuum. Improving on the design of the 1712 Newcomen engine, the Watt steam engine, developed sporadically from 1763 to 1775, was the next great step in the development of the steam engine. Offering a dramatic increase in fuel efficiency, the new design replaced Newcomen engines in areas where coal was expensive, and then went on to be used in the place of most natural power sources such as wind and water. James Watt's design became synonym
