Edison wax cylinder recorder (phonograph). The phonograph was invented in 1877 by Thomas Edison. While other inventors had produced devices that could record sounds, Edison's phonograph was the first to be able to reproduce the recorded sound. His phonograph originally recorded sound onto a tinfoil sheet wrapped around a rotating cylinder. A stylus responding to sound vibrations produced an up and down or hill-and-dale groove in the foil. Edison's Phonograph. In 1877 Thomas Edison filed a patent on a machine that could record and play back sound. He demonstrated this simple device by reciting the poem Mary had a little lamb. Edison's phonograph was developed as a result of Thomas Edison's work on two other inventions, the telegraph and the telephone. In 1877, Edison was working on a machine that would transcribe telegraphic messages through indentations on paper tape, which could later be sent over the telegraph repeatedly. This development led Edison to speculate that a telephone message could also be recorded in a similar fashion. He experimented with a diaphragm which had an embossing point and was held against rapidly-moving paraffin paper. The speaking vibrations made indentations in the paper. A golden-colored bronze statue of Thomas Alva Edison, the American inventor of the phonograph in 1877, is displayed with some early phonographs at his former winter estate in Fort Myers, Florida, USA. That 21-acre property is now a sprawling historical museum where visitors can also see other famous Edison inventions, including incandescent light bulbs and the motion picture camera. While his initial phonograph used a rotating cylinder covered with tinfoil to record and play back sound, later models utilized wax-coated cylinders and were fitted with large horns to amplify the sound.
