RM2CAWAK9–An old cigarette card (c. 1929) with a portrait of Benjamin Franklin FRS FRSA FRSE (1706–1790) and an illustration of his lightning conductor (rod). Franklin was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. As an inventor, he is known for the lightning rod, bifocals, and the Franklin stove. Franklin conducted his well-known kite experiment in Philadelphia in 1752, extracting sparks from a cloud. The kite collected an electric charge from a storm cloud, showing that lightning was electrical. He then installed conductors on his own house and the Pennsylvania State House.
