Also known as a high wheel or high wheeler, the bicycle with its large front wheel was popular in the 1870s and early 80s, providing speed and comfort. Although dangerous to ride because of its height, the bike became a symbol of the late victorian era and the birth of cycling as a sport. It became obsolete in the late 1980s, with the creation of the modern bicycle with the invention of chain-driven gear trains and pneumatic tires.
