After the occupation of Morella, Colonel Linares decided to attack the Baron of Herves (Rafael Ram de Viu y Pueyo), who had proclaimed Charles V king on 13 November 1833 in that town. The Carlists, outnumbered by the Liberal troops, were forced to abandon their positions and left in disarray.
