Chi-Chi, the famous giant panda, in her London Zoo enclosure in the winter of 1967. Chi-Chi became the Zoo's star attraction and the UK's best-loved zoo animal. She arrived in 1958. The Zoological Society of London did not encourage collection of wild pandas, but accepted Chi-Chi as she had already been collected (Chi-Chi was caught in the wild in Sichuan, China in 1954). Although Chi-Chi's visit was planned to last for only 3 weeks, it was decided to buy her. In 1966 a mating attempt was made between Chi-Chi and An-An, of the Moscow Zoo – it was not successful. Chi-Chi died on 22 July 1972.
