A Persian miniature is a small painting on paper, whether a book illustration or a separate work of art intended to be kept in an album of such works called a muraqqa. The techniques are broadly comparable to the Western and Byzantine traditions of miniatures in illuminated manuscripts. Although there is an equally well-established Persian tradition of wall-painting, the survival rate and state of preservation of miniatures is better, and miniatures are the best-known form of Persian painting.

RM2B01E86–Iran/Persia: Portrait of a girl smoking, Muhammad Qasim Musavvir (c. 1575-1659), Isfahan, 17th century. Muhammad Qasim Musavvir, one of the famous artists of the Isfahan School, was born in Tabriz. Although his style is quite individual, it has something of the manner of Riza Abbasi, head of the painters' workshop of Shah Abbas I between 1603 and 1605. Muhammad Qasim was responsible for a number of paintings for albums, portraits of dervishes, young women, cup bearers and princes. He also illustrated a copy of Firdawsi's Book of Kings dated 1648, now at Windsor Castle.

RM2B01FY4–Iraq: The Wedding Banquet, Maqamat al-Hariri by al-Hariri of Basra (1054 - 10 September 1122), c. 1225-1235. The ‘Maqama’ are a collection of picaresque Arabic tales written in the form of rhymed prose in which rhetorical extravagance is conspicuous. The style was invented in the 10th century by Badi al-Zaman al-Hamadhani and extended by Abu Muhammad al-Qasim ibn Ali al-Hariri of Basra the following century. Al-Hariri was an Arab poet and scholar, and a high government official of the Seljuks. His best known work was his Maqamat al-Hariri, a collection of over 50 stories.
