RM2DA9YJR–An old engraving of a portable, metal earth closet or toilet. It is from a Victorian book of the 1880s. An earth, pail closet or privy was a device used for the disposal of human waste. The closet had a seat, and a portable receptacle below that collected the waste. It was removed and emptied by the local authority on a regular basis. The contents, known as night soil, would either be incinerated or composted into fertiliser. Earth systems still exist in remote areas, when camping and in poor countries and it can be considered a ‘green’ solution to human waste if hygienic methods are employed.
