In general, a star (such as the Sun) is a heavenly body that emits a great quantity of energy (light and heat). A planet is a body that orbits a star and reflects part of that energy; a natural satellite (or moon) revolves around a planet. All nine planets orbit around the Sun in a counter-clockwise direction. This artist's concept depicts a distant hypothetical solar system, similar to the one recently discovered with the Spitzer Space Telescope. In this artist's rendering, a narrow asteroid belt filled with rocks and dusty debris, orbits a star similar to our own Sun when it was approximately 30 million years old (about the time Earth formed). Within the belt a hypothetical planet also circles the star. Using the Spitzer's heat-seeking infrared eyes, astronomers have recently discovered a similar debris belt surrounding a distant star. This artist's concept shows what a fiery hot star and its close-knit planetary companion might look close up if viewed in visible (left) and infrared light. In visible light, a star shines brilliantly, overwhelming the little light that is reflected by its planet. In infrared, a star is less blinding, and its planet perks up with a fiery glow.Astronomers using NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope took advantage of this fact to directly capture the infrared light of two previously detected planets orbiting outside our solar system. Their findings revealed the temperatures and orbits of the planets. Planetary system formation. Illustration of a primordial nebula (solar nebula, in the case of the Sun) surrounding a newborn star (centre). The Sun was formed in this way as gas coalesced until it was dense enough and hot enough to begin the nuclear reactions that sustain a star. The solar nebula, originally a sphere of gas, dust and rock, became a disc that eventually, under gravity, coalesced into planets. Dwarf planets and moons, illustration. A dwarf planet is a planetary mass object orbiting the Sun that is not a true planet. They are massive enough for their self-gravities to crush them into spheres, but they have not cleared the neighborhood of other material around their orbits.
