Crofter, Callum MacLeod, 63, shoulders his shovel after another day's work on the road ... his OWN road, 29th April 1973. It weaves two and a half miles through two lines of hills, over two peat bogs and skirts the edge of a 250 foot cliff. Callum has tackled this enormous task with just a shovel, a barrow and a pick. The story of Callum's road started in 1925 when he began his campaign to get Inverness county council to build a road to the village of Arnis on Raasay. The council refused, and so he went it alone. Sacred Tank, and Marble Causeway leading to a Sikh Temple, in Umritzir, [India] - from a drawing by W. Carpenter, Jun., 1858. 'Umritzir, the religious capital of the Sikh people...[When Runjeet Singh undertook the rebuilding of the temple, he used]...the white marble pinnacles from the Padshahi Musjid at Lahore, and...beautiful inlaid work from the tomb of Jehangheesi...It now adorns the lower part of this brilliant temple, the upper story of which is of copper gilt: the causeway leading to it is also entirely of inlaid white marble from the same sources. Scene From "Arrah-Na-Pogue", at the Princess's Theatre, 1865. London stage production. 'The beautiful scene which we have selected for one of our Illustrations will be recognised immediately by all who have witnessed, during the last three months, the representation of Mr. Dion Boucicault's very interesting dramatic story at the Princess's Theatre. It is a piece of characteristic Irish scenery, with a round tower, a broken arch, a lonely road-side, a river shining in the moonlight, and the barren hills of the dim background overlooking the lovers' trysting-place.
