Derek played in the Great Britain hockey team which won a bronze medal in the 1952 Olympic Games. At that time there were only 11 medals given out and so both he and one of the other squad members missed out on receiving a medal. In partnership with the BOA, GB Hockey was able to put this right in 2010 he was given a medal made from the original cast.
