An early printed photograph of the control platform of the engine room aboard the P & O Liner HIMALAYA. Following WWII, P & O began rebuilding their passenger fleet with the S S HIMALAY at Vickers Armstrong shipyard at Barrow-in-Furness. The 28,047 gross ton liner was at the time the largest passenger liner in the world. The vessel had an innovative Weir system evaporating plant for distilling fresh drinking water from sea water. An old engraving of Newcomen’s engine. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. The atmospheric engine (Newcomen or Newcomen fire engine) was invented by Thomas Newcomen in 1712. The engine was operated by condensing steam drawn into the cylinder, thereby creating a partial vacuum which allowed the atmospheric pressure to push the piston into the cylinder. It was the first practical device to harness steam to produce mechanical power. Newcomen engines were used throughout the UK and Europe in the 1700s, principally to pump water out of mines. An old engraving of the Watt double-action steam engine of the mid-1700s. It is from a Victorian book of the 1890s on discoveries and inventions during the era. Alternatively known as the Boulton and Watt steam engine, it was an early steam engine, a vast improvement on the Thomas Newcomen 1712 design, and was one of the driving forces of the Industrial Revolution. James Watt developed the design from 1763 to 1775 with support from Matthew Boulton. In 1765 Watt had the idea of equipping the engine with a separate condensation chamber, which he called a ‘condenser’ (here bottom right). An old engraving of a large Cornish beam engine used in mining in the 1800s. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. Here it powers the pumps that kept excess water out of the mineshaft (right). This type of steam engine was developed in Cornwall, England, UK. It uses steam at a higher pressure than the earlier atmospheric ones designed by Thomas Newcomen and then James Watt. The engines were also used for winching materials into and out of the mine. Many of these efficient engines (using an external condenser) were erected by the firm of Boulton and Watt in Cornwall. An old engraving of a giant Leeghwater beam engine in the Netherlands of the c.1850. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. Giant pumps were used in the reclamation of the Haarlemmermeer (Haarlem Mere), a lake whose growth presented a danger to the cities of Amsterdam and Leiden. On completion in 1852, there were three large steam-driven pumps (Lijnden, Kaag and Cruquius). The installation at Kaag, the Gemaal De Leeghwater, began pumping water into the Kaag lake in 1845. It was built by Cornish engineers, Harveys, and was then the biggest steam engine ever built. An old engraving of a large Cornish beam engine used in the 1800s. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. The engine was mainly used to pump excess water out of mines. A Cornish engine is a type of steam engine developed in Cornwall, England, UK. It is a beam engine that uses steam at a higher pressure than the earlier atmospheric beam engines designed by Thomas Newcomen and then James Watt. The engines were also used for winching materials into and out of the mine and for powering on-site ore stamping machinery to extract metals like copper and tin from the ore.
