1870: An old man peering through the window of the Jew's House, built in the 12th Century one of the earliest extant town houses in England. It is situated on Steep Hill in Lincoln, immediately below Jew's Court. The house has traditionally been associated with the thriving Jewish community in Medieval Lincoln. Following Anti-Semitic hysteria in the 13th Century the entire Jewish community was expelled from England, and the Jew's House was supposedly being seized from a Jewish owner. A highly decorative house in early 17th Century Moorfields, one of the last pieces of open land in the City of London, near the Moorgate. After the Great Fire of London in 1666, refugees from the fire evacuated there and set up temporary camps there. King Charles II of England encouraged the dispossessed to move on and leave London, but it is unknown how many newly impoverished and displaced persons instead settled in the Moorfields area. St. Valentine's Morn, drawn by Marcus Stone, 1864. 'In old times it was customary for a lover to place himself on Valentine's morn under his mistress's window, that he might be the first person to behold her on that day, and so be entitled to claim her as his Valentine for the year. "Beneath thy window, Sweetheart mine! I've watched since dawn of day, To greet thee as my Valentine And homage to thee pay; For thou art dearer to my heart Than all my tongue can say! "Lord Riverdale's Repentance" [by William J. Stewart]: George rescuing his grandfather, drawn by A. Hunt, 1862. 'That hand was nearer to him at that moment than he dreamt. The thought of George so filled his mind as for a moment to exclude all consideration of his danger. He was recalled to it by a crashing blow upon the window, shattering it. His time had come, then. He turned to meet his death. The window was flung up then, and not death, but George Cowper, with hope of life and rescue, leaped into the room. The old man fell back.
