Scientists of many countries including Britain , America , Sweden , and Russia , have taken up positions with elaborate apparatus to watch the solar eclipse today ( Friday ) . The path of the eclipse is about 100 miles wide extending from Athens in an arc across the Black Sea , through Siberia and the North of Japan into the Pacific Ocean . The research ship william Scoresby arrived in St Katherine Dock , London , after seven months work in Antarctic waters . This , the ship ' s fifth visit to the Southern Ocean , was occupied in observing and marking whales . During 120 days on the whaling grounds the William Scoreby steamed almost 17 , 000 miles and marked 700 whales .
